Successful USA Importing

As a US customer buying from an overseas seller you may be deemed as the importer, or importer of record of the goods, depending on the terms outlined in the sale. It is the importer's responsibility to arrange for the commercial import process and account for applicable duty and/or taxes while ensuring compliance with customs regulations. 

1. Preparing Your Customs
Establish an account with a US Customs Broker
A licensed US customs broker will act on your behalf to carry out customs-related responsibilities. The customs broker will also partner with you to ensure compliance.

2. Ensuring Your Customs Compliance
Ensure proper documentation goes with your shipment 
It is important to make sure the Canadian company selling you the goods (exporter or vendor) provides accurate and compliant documentation with the shipment. Canadian exporters play an important role in ensuring their US customers maintain a good compliance record. The results? Faster release times and no import penalties. 

The main shipping document is called the US Customs Invoice.

A US Customs Invoice or Commercial Invoice is needed for all shipments sent to the US. It is the main document used for reporting. 

A NAFTA Certificate of Origin is needed for all shipments that qualify under the NAFTA Rules or Origin. Qualifying goods with a valid certificate of origin can enter the country duty free.

Keep accurate books and records
As an importer, you must keep accurate records to verify the goods imported. You have to keep records in the US, in either paper or electronic format, for five years from the date of entry. Your customs broker will provide you with copies of the import transaction to support your records.
